Sun Tech? Great! Sun Sales? Terrible
by Kendall Clark
I like a lot of Sun’s tech, including ZFS, the zones stuff, dtrace, etc. The new AMP support is also great. And I love AMD CPUs, so their x86 servers are right up our alley.
Since C&P is part of Sun’s Startup Essentials program, we get really great prices.
So what’s the problem? Sun, as a sales organization, is pathologically, unspeakably bad. I don’t have an MBA and I’ve never taken a biz course; but surely one of the first rules of business is
make it easy for people to give you their money
Sun makes it very, very hard; they make finding server availability even harder. The “Startup Essentials” ghetto on the Sun Store site is inexcusable.
I don’t want to buy a Dell or an HP; but, goddam it, I will have to start doing so if Sun keeps wasting my time with their disorganization. Sure, every time I speak to a Sun employee on the phone they are nice, friendly, and they want to help me.
But usually they can’t. The “best tech” will only last so long.
