The Big Picture
When doing cutting-edge R&D in computer science, you better have at least one foot in the university: think of innovation as a pipeline running from theory to practice. At each segment of that pipeline there are organizations—some academic, some commercial—that move the ideas from conception to reality.
We focus on the Semantic Web, which is an imminently practical vision that got its first uptake, largely, in academia. A component of our business model is to be the first point of commercialization for novel research ideas that originate in the university. Our interest and expertise in Description Logics—the technology that underlies OWL—is a good example.
